Foreign policy, free speech are under fire on campuses
By Mary Beth Marklein
USA TODAY

"..The attacks of Sept. 11 are prompting a new war of words on college campuses between a group critical of a ''blame America first'' bias and professors who see academic freedom under assault.

With various polls showing most Americans support U.S. military strikes in Afghanistan, some faculty groups are re-emphasizing their right to hold unpopular views -- in this case, views critical of U.S. foreign policy.

''At a moment such as this, we must make sure that all informed voices -- especially those that are critical and dissenting -- are heard,'' says a statement signed by more than 2,000 professors and scholars. Coordinators hope to publish it soon as an advertisement in a national publication. The American Association of University Professors also has urged support for free speech.

But longtime critics argue that faculty are squelching debate by imposing their views on students.

That attitude ''has made some students and faculty somewhat loathe to speak their mind if it's contrary to the dominant campus ideology,'' says Anne Neal, vice president of the American Council on Trustees and Alumni (ACTA), a Washington-based group critical of liberal tendencies in academia.

This week, ACTA released a report documenting more than 100 examples in the media and on the Web that show a ''blame America first'' bias among faculty. At best, faculty reactions were ''equivocal,'' Neal says. Patriotism was rarely promoted.

Among examples: Massachusetts Institute of Technology linguistics professor Noam Chomsky is quoted as saying the ''only way to put an end to terrorism is to stop participating in it''; a University of Texas professor in Austin said the terrorist attacks were ''no more despicable than the massive acts of terrorism that the U.S. government has committed.''

Brown University English professor William Keach, whose remarks disparaging U.S. foreign policy were criticized in the report, says he doesn't mind the negative e-mails he has received after his comments. But professors elsewhere have been rebuked. The chancellor of the City University of New York, for example, publicly denounced faculty who criticized U.S. foreign policy at a teach-in.

ACTA, too, says it wants to expand the debate, not silence dissent. Its report, being mailed to 3,000 trustees, is part of a wider ACTA initiative to urge colleges and universities to strengthen programs and courses in American history and Western civilization.

Meanwhile, other participants in the free-speech debate say they aren't surprised by this latest twist. For years, conservative groups have argued that college campuses have become hotbeds of liberalism and say their concerns have largely been ignored.

Now, with public support of U.S. foreign policy so strong, ''almost overnight on some campuses the worm has turned,'' says Harvey Silverglate, co-founder of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, dedicated to protecting free speech on campuses.

''In a country where power shifts back and forth, inevitably something is going to happen that is going to cause the pendulum to swing. It's a great advertisement for the notion that we have to protect the (speech) we hate...''

Great report! North America Free-speech is stifled everywhere, not only in campuses but in the virtual world too. Haven't you noticed that no one posts around beside the few friends I have told about this site. It's not out of the blue that I found your sites and forums. I search for it for weeks, to find answers to my puzzling demand to a lot of mystery that goes around lately. I found only one on Carlyle (by RainyDazed) and this one my cousin 'Obezlix' found it.

PS: -if you click on my name you will find that I was visually attacked 'one-more-time' and spammned with 2,500 hate messages and over-ridden to important messages from two persons that posted several documents about the WTC CFI bio-destruction to NYC after the explosion and fires, among other things.. about 500 posts of valuable discussion.

Yep about the environmental issues -(resulting in increased UV exposure) by CFCs, or the carcinogenicity of the chrysotile form of asbestos to the WTC cooling system, (which makes up 95% of asbestos in place in North-America).

My only weapon is to spread the News.

Anna *

PS: the search engine around on Delphi sucks, big-time.. you can't see it from the outside.

Ranaki, i'm glad you're in the team.
Many members are too shy to speak (or scared?), but they read a lot from what i see from the log-files.

We worked here hard on every detail to solve the puzzle and now concentrating on current events, but still investigating in the one or other topic. I know another board, who is more open-minded among their members, but they are more politically orientated(democraticunderground.com , good sources!).
GZ however try to put emphasis on investigation and less polemic arguments and the atmosphere is quit good.
We also have an own chatroom on IRC.

Therefore i just complained to my european friends per email only, how weired the Campus Situation have been here. They obviously underestimate the situation here and analyse only the war stories.
That's too less for me.

Right now i have no idea, what's going on on US-campuses,
but i'm glad about every update.

>I search for it for weeks, to find answers to my puzzling demand to >a lot of mystery that goes around lately. I found only one on >Carlyle (by RainyDazed) and this one my cousin 'Obezlix' found it.

Well, maybe it's better to keep anonymous with a secondary email right now, but i'm optimistic because of many new sceptics i saw at the 911-petition. We're getting more!
I hope you also found the "INDEX: Carlyle" topic here on GZ.

I know also about spam- and virus attacks to other sceptics,
but that's still better than threatening their live.
(I think here of a possibility in the Don C. Wiley- and William Cooper-case)

That i don't get. I looked at your profile, but how can i see it from there?

>Yep about the environmental issues -(resulting in increased UV >exposure) by CFCs, or the carcinogenicity of the chrysotile form of >asbestos to the WTC cooling system, (which makes up 95% of asbestos >in place in North-America).

GZ brought a topic about that in late september.
Maybe i find it later again for you.
You should look in the "media"-folder first.

I was looking lately for Sheldon Silver, who is the official spokesman for all these PCB/Asbestos-Updates, but couldn't find much news.

Fact is, many babies and childrens nearby the Towers have Asthma and the lungs of the firefighters you can already put in the garbage-can.

>the search engine around on Delphi sucks

I agree. Unfortunatley. :)

OK. thanks, I know someone that has a lot of environmental info, through ENN, I'll tell him to come over. Things don't look good, (me) as a skier I've seen in around me, for one it's mid January and we don't have snow yet, most of it is slush... while it snowed in odd places as in Greece and in Florida. (if anyone think, that's normal they must be having to much fun appreciating the huge change)

The control of free speech in the United States continues.
While the mainstream media ignores all scepticism and criticism (on purpose?), CNN shutdown now their messageboard.

Still not many american people complain...
